»Never Say Die!« sollte das letzte Studio-Album des originalen Black Sabbath-Line-Ups werden. Die Aufnahmen waren von allen möglichen Komplikationen überschattet. Ozzy Osbourne hatte die Band zwischenzeitlich schon verlassen, nur um überraschend zu den Aufnahmen zurückkehren. Das Studio in Toronto stellte sich als die falsche Wahl heraus, und der Gebrauch von Drogen hatte für die Band jede Leichtigkeit verlieren lassen. Das Album gilt bei der Kritik als »zerfahren«, allerdings bleibt festzuhalten, dass das Publikum das Album sofort mochte und es Black Sabbath bei Veröffentlichung eine der höchsten Chart-Notierungen einbrachte. Die Graphik-Agentur Hipgnosis übernahm wieder das Design und schuf mit dem Motiv der Piloten eines der großen ikonischen Coverartworks der Musikgeschichte.
